Facial Thread Veins and Spider Leg Veins
What are thread veins?
Thread veins, broken veins are those small red, blue and purple vessels that appear most frequently on the face and legs. These are called telengiectasia. When these
vessels coalesce they are known as Spider veins. Spider veins occur more commonly in the legs. Unlike Varicose veins which are usually larger than ¼ inch in diameter
and may appear raised with a bluish colour.
Why do thread veins develop?
There are various factors that can contribute to developing Thread veins. Firstly genetics play a major role, if either of your parents had Thread veins there is a greater
chance that you may develop them. Women taking HRT or the contraceptive pill are also prone to Thread veins. Other factors like extremes of weather, ultra violet
light have been shown to predispose to these vessels.
Which laser would be used?
We use the long pulsed Nd:YAG.
How does the ND:Yag work?
During your treatment, light energy is delivered through a special laser handpiece to the targeted vessel in a series of brief pulses. The laser light is absorbed by the
blood vessel but not the surrounding tissue. This heat absorption causes a coagulation of the blood vessel, which gradually gets dissolved away and disappears over
the next few weeks after the treatment.
What does laser treatment feel like?
Most people describe the sensation like a hot pin-prick, or a rubber band snap. We use cold packs immediately after the treatment which helps reduce the discomfort
as well as l reducing the redness that does occur.
What can I expect after treatment?
Most fine thread veins tend to disappear visibly. Others may take a few weeks to dissolve and disappear. Most commonly the treated area appears slightly red and
occasionally there maybe blistering or crusting. These conditions tend to resolve pretty quickly.
How many treatments do I need?
Usually 1-3 treatments are required, however its entirely dependent on the extent of the affected area and the size of the vessels which will be assessed during the
consultation. Should there be a need for more treatments, a gap of 3-4 weeks is usually required. We strongly advise wearing Sun Protection after the treatment, especially for
people of darker skin types.
